Gregory L. Dolise

Gregory L. Dolise, 62, of Harrisburg, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2016 in the ER at Harrisburg Community General Hospital from a heart attack and complications from a lengthy struggle with diabetes and kidney disease.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, on July 13, 1954 to the late Louis and Frances Dolise, he is survived by his brother, Richard and sister-in-law, Barbara; his godson, Ben; goddaughter, Sarah; and many cousins, colleagues and friends across the country.

He earned a B.S. Degree in optics and Masters’ Degree in both Education and in Astronomy. Sine 1997, Gregory was a professor of Physics and Astronomy at Harrisburg Area Community College (H.A.C.C.). Earlier, he taught high school science in NYC. Before discovering his true passion for educating young minds, Greg worked in the aerospace industry and was proud to have operated with the mirror group during the development of the Hubble Telescope and with other satellite projects.

Greg’s lifelong passion with science and championing the scientific method began with a childhood love of science fiction books and movies. He always wanted to know the background and underlying reasons for the Universe being as it is, whether the idea was from fact of fiction. He also had a lifelong interest in photography, both space and terrestrial nature shots, films of all types and was a car-racing fan and games player.

He was a working member and officer of the American Association of Physics Teachers and a fervent member of the Springfield Telescope Makers group, attending their annual event Stellafane in Vermont every summer for more than 30yrs, until this one.

A visitation at 10:00AM and a Catholic Memorial Mass at 11:00AM will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church, 6150 Allentown Blvd, Harrisburg, PA 17112. Interment will be at the family plot at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY at a later date.

Going to miss you brother. Who else can I trade one liners with from old monster movies and SF films. You needed a rest...you earned it with your hard work to just keep going. Be at Peace.

You always looked up to the stars, now your there. I hope your new prospective of looking down on the earth is just as awe inspiring to you. I look at the stars every night because of you, send me a twinkle.

He was a good friend and coworker back in the early days at Spiratone. Always had great conversations with him. I'm sad to hear he is gone.

Oh Professor Dolise! I think about you often. I'm so glad that I had YOU teach me one of my favorite subjects over your (and my) last two semesters at HACC. I loved making you laugh and I hope I made you proud! I'll never forget you giving me -200 points for continually forgetting my leading zero haha! ;) You're missed dearly! Xoxo
