George W. Getz, Sr. (Pete)

Pete went to be with the Lord surrounded by family on January 11, 2017. Born November 7, 1926 on the West Side of Steelton he graduated from Steelton High School where he excelled in football. Drafted at the age of 17 he proudly served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps during WW II on a hospital ship. After his Honorable discharge he was employed by Bethlehem Steel and served five years as the President of United Steelworkers Union Local 1688. He retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1976. He was employed by AFL-CIO Job Corps recruitment program until he retired in 1989 helping disadvantaged youth develop employment skills. Pete was a lifetime member of many clubs and organizations and was most proud of his affiliation with Steelton Lions Club (Past President), Steelton Fifth Ward, Steelton Moose, American Legion, Salvation Army, USWA Local 1688, Blood Bank, WW II Museum and Flight 93 memorial. He was a contributor to numerous charities especially for children and veterans.

Pete was the son of Merle Getz Sr. and Clara Shaffner Getz. He was raised by Joseph and Emma Yetter of Steelton. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 37 years Gloria Hendershot Getz. He is survived by two sons, John J. Getz and his wife Lucy of Shiremanstown and George W. Getz, Jr. of Carlisle. He was the loving Grandfather of Jillian Getz Fletcher and husband Lonnie of Harrisburg, Pa. and Allison Getz Bunker and husband Pat of Panama City Beach, Florida. He had a special smile and place in his heart for his great grandchildren Nathan and Samantha Fletcher and Hudson Bunker.
 He is also survived by brothers Joseph Yetter of Camp Hill, Pa., Barry Yetter of South Carolina and  Merle Getz of Bethlehem, Pa. and sisters Ruth Yetter Swartley of Hershey, Pa. and Marion Getz Hough of Bethlehem, Pa. and a number of nephews and nieces.

        Pete was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 420 Progress Avenue, Harrisburg, PA. Services will be held there Tuesday January 17, 2017. Visitation at 10 AM.  Services at 11:00 AM. 

  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 420 N. Progress Avenue, Harrisburg, PA. 17109.
