James Thomas O’Toole, 84, of Philadelphia, passed away March 4, 2019, at Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse. Born June 3, 1934, in Norfolk, VA, he was son of James O’Toole and Elizabeth M. Johnson.

James was raised in Norfolk, VA and Houston, TX and was a graduate of Rice University and the University of Minnesota where he received his Ph. D. He was a professor at Princeton University and worked as a chemical engineer for ARCO in Philadelphia until his retirement.

Surviving are his daughters, Alannah Ryan (O’Toole) and husband, James Ryan, Deidre O’Toole, Shelagh Kulchin (O’Toole) and husband, William Kulchin; son, Eamonn O’Toole; granddaughters, Julia Ryan, Maura Ryan, Madeline Ryan, Liana Kulchin, and Olivia Kulchin; companion, Margaret Holman; and his cat, Tigger.

He was predeceased by his former spouse, Barbara O’Toole (McNamara).
