Maretta Krantz Schmidt

July 30, 1946 – July 08, 2019

Maretta Schmidt, 72, devoted mother, loving wife, cherished grandmother, and loyal friend died peacefully on July 8, 2019 at UPMC Pinnacle Osteopathic Community Hospital, surrounded by the comfort and grace of her family.

Maretta was the beloved wife of Donald E. Schmidt, who resides in Dauphin, PA. After earning their Master’s degrees in secondary education from Shippensburg University, they wed On August 28, 1970 and began teaching in Harrisburg area. Shortly, thereafter they began building the house that would be their home for 45 years in Stony Creek Valley.

In 1975, Maretta began her most important and successful job, when she became a mother. During her years raising children, the family spent summers camping and traveling the contiguous United States. Later when her children went off to college, Maretta went back to work. She went back to her roots and taught English at the Harrisburg Area Community College. However, Maretta always loved educating a younger audience so her next chapter was as Principal of Good Shepard Elementary School in Camp Hill, PA. Finally, Maretta ascended the administrative ranks and served as Assistant Superintendent in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg until her death.

Maretta’s strength and compassion never went unnoticed by her grandchildren. They fiercely loved their MeMaw and will carry on her legacy through their kindness and love.

Maretta is survived by her sister, Gina Krantz, of Manalapan, NJ. She is also survived by three children and their spouses, Kiera Jackson (husband Malcolm), Heath Schmidt (wife Kate), and Adam Schmidt (wife Christine); seven grandchildren, Landyn and Braelyn Jackson, Donovan and Lidia Schmidt, and Ava, Aiden and Ethan Schmidt. Maretta also leaves behind many dear friends, too numerous to list but not forgotten.

Maretta will be greatly missed by many. Hers is truly a life to be celebrated.

On Saturday July 20, 2019, at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Dauphin, PA, visitation will be held at 10:00 am-11:00 am and Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am.
